BREATHING LIGHT

IMA/ITP Winter Show

Designed over the span of a semester, this interactive exhibit was a collaborative project with Kristopher Shi, Yumeng Lu, and Liam Tsang. Inspired by Japanese Noguchi lights, the large installation's gentle movements instilled a sense of calm and peace within the observer.

A playful performance featuring a barbershop quartet formed of four singing frogs: John Coltoad, Tod Paul, Ranita O'Day, & Jerry. The frogs were wired to an Arduino hidden underneath the stage and were manipulated by hand. They would sing a variety of swing music with Ableton's MIDI features.

FROGGY LICKS!

 Designing Interfaces for Live Performances

The idea for this concept appeared in my mind during class, and I had to quickly scribble it down on paper so I wouldn't forget. It had to be playful and endearing to the audience–– something simple to enjoy and appreciate. The initial prototype was made out of cardboard, with the goal of testing out the effectiveness of the light sensors. It would additionally serve as a way to set the mood for what the final product should feel like.

In the final design, I had to expand the scale of the project, which also meant that the puppets needed more dimension. The design was elevated from here on out for the better: color was added for visibility, and the frame of the puppets was better suited for hiding the electronics. This final stage of the design was made with laser-cut birch, ornamental baubles, and felt. The breadboard and arduino were wired through the tongues of the puppets.

The Final Product

Though it was made for a performance, I'm happiest of how it was exhibited during the IMA/ITP Spring Show, as it put a smile on audience's faces as they got to try to make the puppets sing!It was certainly not without flaws, though. If I could do it again, much of the design would be tweaked to make it more intuitive to use, and more capable of withstanding aggressive use.Nevertheless, these frogs were a wonderful interactive experience to create, and a fantastic teaching vessel for fabrication and design.

The above depicts a 3D render of two character models from the series Warriors by Erin Hunter. After three years of production, the project's episode was released to the YouTube channel LittleDragonStudios on April 1st, which adapted the series' first chapter of the first book.My primary roles were with texture art, light design, character overview, environment design and composition, as well as thumbnail concept and finalization. The thumbnail above was a collaboration between myself and Kaida Lynch.

The above is a prototype!COpilot is a collaborative experience, where no more and no less than two people can interact with it at a time.
Each person will stand on both ends of the installation: one will have access to a peep hole that's adjustable to height, and the other will have access to a hand crank. When the crank is turned, the fans running across the center will fly open and spin, revealing a frame by frame animation.

 Large Scale Kinetic Installations

Documentation

Concept Process

From the beginning, I knew that I wanted to create an illusion reminiscent of a Zoetrope, where the audience would have to see the machine spinning in order for the image to move. However, I also wanted it to have a two-person, interactive component.  The biggest challenge was trying to figure out the logistics and scale of the project. Several concepts were ultimately scrapped due to complexity or plausibility. In the end I landed with something akin to the image below. Each person would stand on opposite ends, one with a peep hole, and one with a rotating crank. This created a give-and-take component to the piece, making it intimate and self-sacrificial between the two participants.

The Future

Though ultimately my prototype was not selected to be part of projects that would be turned large-scale, I would like to eventually move forwards with the creation of it for exhibition purposes.  Some of its major flaws included the scale I'd originally intended for this project; hopefully, if returned to the working bench, it would be able to stand on a desk and experienced that way.

Inspired by Japanese Noguchi lights, The Breathing Light was a collaborative project with Kristopher Shi, Yumeng Lu, and Liam Tsang, in pursuit of creating a large installation that would create a sense of calm and peace within the observer. The light is meant to replicate the gentle, delicate breathing of living beings with its wings made of wood and paper, controlled with an arduino and motors.

Breathing Light

 Large Scale Kinetic Installation

When we first started this project, we wanted to make it as close to the original noguchi lights as possible, meaning that we would have to create a light frame made of basket round weed and tracing paper.  We took turns over a few hours working on the base, soaking the reed and shaping it on a frame.  So we kept trying...  ...and trying...  ...And failing.  Until we ultimately decided that we needed to pivot. Soon, we came up with an alternative: light birch wood framing would work just as well.

Wing prototyping & fabrication

The wings were a constant challenge due to their fragility; the nature of the noguchi lights required us to keep things as visually simple as possible, meaning that we had to get creative with how we supported each element.  Additionally, the tracing paper needed to be placed perfectly. Knowing that light would shine through, any imperfection would be clear to the audience.

Motors & Installation

The Final Product

Displayed at the IMA/ITP Spring Show, the Breathing Light was ultimately a success. Although we ran into several hurdles, our improvised fixes worked to the installation's advantage without damaging the experience of the light.  It received a great deal of positive feedback, and many people took the time to lie under the light as it moved above them.

When I was first onboarded as an intern at Eventique, the company had been recently contracted to take on this project. I grew involved as a graphic design artist for the project, and have been on the team all the way up to its opening date on December 15th, 2023.A number of the projects I contributed to included the conception of the Field of Light at Freedom Plaza logo, directional signage, and step & repeats for photo moments, with guidance of SVA professor and graphic design artist Andy Outis.Additionally, I was on-site the opening night for final activation, taking a hands-on role in decoration and creating gift-bags for the guests of the event.

Concept Process

The concepts I provided for the project went through a heavy revision process, oftentimes resulting in a number of concepts that wouldn't be used in the final event.
There was a delicate balance to be struck between composition and conciseness that I needed to strike, and through studying other works and collaborating with other artists on the project, I was able to achieve successful designs for the project.

With a relatively short turnaround, Eventique was contracted to decorate Bagelmania, a restaurant adjacent to the convention center, as a lounge space for con-goers.I had the opportunity to work closely on the moodboard and furniture selection for the space.

Moodboard & Decor

The slides depicted on the left were designed and organized by myself, taking inspiration from the mid-2010s vaporwave / retro style that continues to be popular today with gamer audiences.  This was workshopped with the brand as we retained vibrant elements for the entrance and to underscore LED lights throughout the experience while making the best use of the time alloted before the experience.

Final Install

The install included a neon pink-and-purple entrance into Bagelmania, where con-goers would be able to relax in the lounge space and purchase food after the event.

In preparation for the holidays, L'Occitane worked with Eventique to create a popup in NYC for their Choose Joy campaign in December of 2023.Spanning several months, I created a series of slide decks that would be presented to the client, faithful to the style that they chose to represent in their campaign from artist Steve Wilson.Additionally, I converted and recreated graphics as print-ready files that would later be wall vinyls, and I participated in the final install at the venue.

Through a partnership with the Zeno group, Eventique co-created and produced a media influencer event for the relaunch of Hefty's Zoo Pals plates. After being onboarded onto this event, I was able to participate on the organization of the site layout and decor, and was on-site the day of the event's launch to activate the relaunch the day-of.
